Awash with cutting-edge coastal style, Malibu has always been a destination for fashion-forward travelers. Jetsetters bask in the sun on white-sand beaches, and local and designer boutiques like Everything But Water beckon just steps from the Pacific and Malibu Beach Inn.

As summer peaks in Southern California, we decided to catch up with Everything But Water’s co-owner and Creative Director Sabra Krock about her own distinct style, her favorite tips for traveling, and what to wear this season in Malibu.

Sabra Krock, co-owner and Creative Director of Everything But Water.

Both strategic and creative, Krock previously worked in management consulting and professional photography before purchasing Everything But Water with her husband, Randall Blumenthal, eight years ago. Today, the company is the largest specialty retailer of swim and resort wear styles in the country, and Krock regularly travels the world to discover the newest styles in swimwear.

How would you describe your personal style?

Very modern, clean, simple, and uncluttered. I don’t really dive heavily into trends but stick to timeless pieces and things I really love. I love Japanese-influenced fashion with very clean lines. Day to day, I am lazy – I have lots of leggings I love and tops and dresses that are my go-tos. I love earrings, which are my main accessory.

What tips do you have for maintaining a healthy lifestyle in the midst of a busy life?

I try to walk versus take taxis or the subway when I can, which New York City is very conducive to. I have two set exercise classes per week (Pilates) that I never miss, no matter what. They are scheduled and I work everything else around them. I try to keep hydrated, which is always a challenge for me, but I always tote around a favorite sustainable, reusable bottle which reminds and encourages me to have water.

What about keeping things stylish but comfortable while traveling?

Leggings! I love black leggings and have them in various fabrications. They are so easy, comfortable, and take half the guesswork out of dressing.

When it comes to Everything But Water, where do you find inspiration?

All over, from traveling and social media and fashion in unrelated categories. I make a point of shopping and scouting new and upcoming designers and designers in other markets. There is so much inspiration in what women are doing all over the world in building smaller fashion businesses. It’s always fun to find a new pearl out there and nurture it.

What trends are you seeing this summer in swimwear?

Tropical prints, bandeaus, great black swimsuits (interesting silhouettes, great details, lots of newness), bow-front suits, textures, and yellow.

Do you have a go-to summer outfit?

An easy sundress.

How do you like to recuperate from traveling once you arrive at your destination?

Get outside, take a walk, and start exploring.

What would you say is your greatest accomplishment with Everything But Water?

Our Water is Everything initiative, which supports ocean conservation with a particular focus on plastic pollution in the ocean. Kicked off in March, it is an achievement that I’m really proud of as our team worked very hard to put it together, and it reaches beyond our daily focus and arena. We are excited to bring attention to and make an impact in this area.

How important are women in leadership roles, and what inspires you most about the women you meet in your career?

Our company is run mainly by women for women, and the lion’s share of our designers are women. I am constantly amazed by the talent in the market and the unique way in which women balance their professional and personal goals and styles. It’s so important for women to see other women in leadership roles and be supportive of women and their advancement.

What is one characteristic you think every leader should have?

Good listening skills.

If you were headed to Malibu Beach Inn for a long weekend, what would you pack?

From our store: go-to swimwear from Marysia and Karla Colletto, a great silk maxi from Natalie Martin, slides from Carrie Forbes or Ancient Greek Sandals, a super comfy pair of Mikoh pants, beauty goodies from Mermaid Beauty, French Girl Organics, and Brush on Block, Sudio ear buds, a great Bkr water bottle, and a hat from Lola Hats.
